Motion detection is the process of detecting a change in the position of an object relative to its surroundings or a change in the surroundings relative to an object. Motion detection can be achieved by either mechanical or electronic methods.
Applies to: All Reolink cameras except for battery-powered ones
Reolink camera judges whether each macroblock has moved by dividing the grid. When the number of moved blocks reaches a certain proportion of the number of armed blocks, the alarm will start.
The working principle of motion detection is that camera will judge it as motion when differences in 2 frames reach 0.5%-10% (customized by adjusting motion sensitivity) of the image. When the picture changes, the number calculated and compared will exceed the threshold and instruct the system to automatically make corresponding processing.
Meanwhile, it may cause false alarms due to light, wind, and color switching. Underreporting will be generated by the size of the moving object, the frequency of movement, the length of the distance, etc. The good news is that smart detection technology together with motion detection has been applied to most Reolink cameras(except for battery-powered ones) to reduce false alarms.
Our motion detection settings include sensitivity and area.
For the PoE and WiFi cameras, motion detection is based on the frame comparison. So the area that the camera is set to detect is the key. Here are the tips to avoid false alerts:
- Set the proper motion detection area on the camera, refer to Set Up Motion Detection Area for Reolink Cameras.
- Set the proper sensitivity for the camera, refer to Set Up Motion Detection Sensitivity for Reolink Cameras.
