Wi-Fi Band Preference

This setting allows you to choose between permanently connecting the camera to either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi frequency band, or setting it to Auto, which means the camera will automatically select the frequency without preference.

Wi-Fi Frequency Band Classification

Before configuring it, you need to understand the concept of Wi-Fi frequency bands. The commonly used Wi-Fi frequency bands are 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

2.4GHz vs. 5GHz

Wi-Fi Frequency Band

Pros

Cons
2.4GHz

Better at penetrating solid obstacles;

Larger coverage area

Usually, more devices use this frequency, resulting in congestion, signal interference, and slower speeds
5GHz

Less prone to interference;

Faster speeds

Smaller coverage area;

Worse at penetrating solid obstacles

Factors Affecting Wi-Fi Signal

The Wi-Fi connection of Reolink security cameras is influenced by factors such as transmission distance, frequency range, and the camera's ability to receive data. Selecting the optimal Wi-Fi frequency band according to specific circumstances can significantly improve the camera's connectivity performance.

Recommended Wi-Fi Frequency Band in Various Scenarios

Scenario Frequency Recommended

Short range and without solid obstacles in the middle

Select "Only 5GHz"

Long range and with some solid obstacles in the middle

Select "Only 2.4GHz"

Unstable connection or camera cannot connect to Wi-Fi

Switch between the three options

Note:

1. Ensure you have the latest version of the Reolink software and the camera's firmware. (Check for firmware updates for your camera on Download Center – Reolink

2. All Reolink cameras that support 2.4GHz and 5GHz connected to the RLN12W can be configured with Wi-Fi Band Preference, but this can only be set up through the NVR monitor.
