Notification Support on Alexa Devices
This table summarizes the compatibility of Reolink devices with Alexa devices such as Echo Show or Echo Dot for notifications and automatic live view features, categorized by Reolink Video Doorbell Series and cameras connected to Reolink Home Hub Series. It is important to note that while the Alexa App is used to configure notifications, it does not support receiving notifications or automatic live view functionality.
Device Type | Notification Support | Notification Types | Automatic Live view |
Reolink Video Doorbell Series | Voice and text notifications | Person/Motion/Doorbell press | Supported when the doorbell is pressed |
Cameras connected to Reolink Home Hub/Home Hub Pro | Varies by camera model, check actual notification types displayed in Alexa App |
Note: If you want to set up the camera to trigger the live video feed when an alarm is detected, please refer to the "Set up a Routine" section in this article.
Set up Your Alexa Device to Receive Notifications
If you want the Alexa device to alert you when the camera detects the motion/when the doorbell is pressed, you can set up the notification for the camera on the Alexa App. But the first thing to do is to make sure you set up the notification schedule and alarm type on the Reolink App properly.
Step 1. Set up Notification on Reolink App
1. Launch the Reolink App. Find the camera and tap the gear icon on the right to go to the settings page of the camera.
2. Tap Push Notification and switch on the button (turn it blue) to enable it.
3. Tap Schedule and tick the corresponding Detection Type (vary depending on the model of your camera) you need. Tap Save and go back to the schedule page.
- Ring: Triggered when someone presses the doorbell button.
- Any Motion: Activated by any movement detected within the camera's field of view.
- Person: Triggered when the camera detects a human presence.
If you'd like to apply this configuration to the other days, select the other days under Copy To.
Step 2. Set up Notification on Alexa App
1. Launch the Alexa App, choose the camera you want to set up on the Device page (the light bulb icon at the bottom), and then go to the camera's Settings page. If you haven't added the camera to the Alexa App, please refer to How to Add Reolink Cameras to Amazon Alexa
Note: For cameras that support live view on the Alexa App, clicking on the camera name will take you directly to the live view screen. To access the camera's settings page, click the gear settings icon in the top-right corner.
2. Decide your Announcement Device. This is the device that will make an announcement when the camera detects motion or is pressed.
3. Enable the notifications for different types of events based on your preferences. Please ensure that the corresponding detection types are enabled on the camera's push schedule page on Reolink App.
- Motion Announcements: Notifies you whenever motion is detected near the door.
- Person Detection Notifications: Alerts you when a person is detected at the door.
- Doorbell Press Announcements: Sends an alert when someone presses the doorbell.
For Reolink video doorbells, you can select the Doorbell Sound, which allows you to choose a custom ringtone that will play on your Alexa device whenever someone presses the doorbell. You can pick the sound you like best for your doorbell alert.
Done! Now, when the camera detects a motion or the doorbell is pressed, the selected announcement device will send corresponding notifications.
If the selected announcement device is an Alexa screen device, and the Doorbell Press Announcement is enabled, the Alexa screen device will alert you when the doorbell has been pressed with both voice and text notifications. It will also automatically stream the doorbell's live feed. You can then enable the microphone on the device for two-way talk functionality.
Set up a Routine
Although the camera's live view screen cannot be automatically called upon an Alexa screen device when the camera detects a motion, you can set a routine to achieve this goal indirectly.
1. Launch the Alexa App. Tap the More button at the bottom and then select Routines from the list.
2. Tap Your Routines > plus(+) icon in the top right corner to create a new routine.
3. You can Rename the routine. For example, Motion detected. Then tap Next.
4. Choose a trigger for the routine. Under When, tap Add an event > Smart Home and find the camera. Select the Capability that you need. Then, when the camera is triggered by the event you selected, this routine will start to run.
Please ensure that the corresponding detection types are enabled on the camera's push schedule page on Reolink App.
- Person: When the camera detects a human presence.
- Doorbell: When someone presses the doorbell button.
- Motion: When any movement is detected within the camera's field of view.
Note: If the camera is connected to the Reolink Home Hub/Home Hub Pro, its notifications feature will be supported, and the capability types supported may vary depending on the model of your camera.
5. Tap Change to set up the Day/Active Time/Frequency for this routine.
6. Add an action to the routine means to set up what you need Alexa to do when this routine is triggered.
a. Show the live video feed: Tap Add an action > Custom and type "Alexa, show the [name of the camera]". Then tap Next.
b. Keep the live video feed: Add an action to set the time for the live video feed to last. Choose Wait and set up the time. Then tap Next in the top right corner.
c. Stop the live video feed: Add an action to ask Alexa to go back to the home screen. Choose Custom and enter "Alexa, home screen".
7. Now, you can choose the device that will show you the live video feed (you may need to slide down on the screen to find this option). And then tap Save.
The routine shown in the pictures below means whenever the doorbell detects a person, Echo Show 8 will automatically display the live feed for 30 seconds and then go back to the home screen of the Echo Show 8.
Then you can test and see if the Alexa screen device will automatically show you a video feed when the camera detects the alarm. If the camera can detect properly but the routine is not working as expected, you can tap on the routine and make sure this routine is enabled.
