Setting up a new Reolink NVR can raise a few questions, especially about how it connects to other devices. One common question is whether it can connect directly to a computer or laptop.

The answer is no — a Reolink NVR cannot be physically connected to a PC or laptop. This is because a computer or laptop is an output device, just like the NVR. To view the NVR’s footage, it needs to be connected to an input device, such as a monitor or TV.

If you're looking for a way to view live footage, recordings, or manage your Reolink NVR using a computer or laptop, here are two recommended methods depending on your setup and needs.

Option 1: View the NVR via Reolink Client on Your Computer

This is the most common and flexible way to view your NVR on a laptop or desktop:

  1. Connect the NVR to your home router using an Ethernet cable.

  2. Install the Reolink Client on your computer or laptop (available for Windows and macOS).

  3. Launch the Client, add the NVR, and you’ll be able to view live feeds, playback recordings, and configure settings.

Option 2: Connect NVR Directly to a Monitor (HDMI/VGA)

If you need to access the NVR’s built-in interface (for example, to export diagnostics, add cameras manually), you can connect it to a monitor or TV:

  • Use an HDMI or VGA cable to connect the NVR to your display device with an HDMI or VGA port (this can even be a TV).

  • Once connected, the monitor will show the NVR's interface directly.

If you only have one monitor at home and it’s currently being used by your PC, you can consider the following two options:

Case A: Monitor Has Dual Input Ports (HDMI + VGA)

  • Connect the NVR to one port (e.g., HDMI), and

  • Connect your computer to the other (e.g., VGA).
Most monitors have a source switch button to toggle between the two inputs.

Case B: Monitor Has Only One Input Port

  • Unplug the monitor from your computer.

  • Connect it to the NVR for configuration or troubleshooting.

  • Reconnect it to your PC when you're finished.

Note:

The interface displayed on a monitor connected directly to the NVR is different from the one shown in the Reolink Client on your computer. Please be sure to distinguish between the two.
In particular, tasks like manually adding cameras to the NVR must be done through the monitor.

With the right setup, managing your NVR by using a combination of a local monitor (HDMI/VGA) or the Reolink Client becomes simple and efficient. Choose the method that best suits your environment to enjoy smooth live viewing and easy device management anytime.
